Grasse
Grasse is the romantic ‘Home of Perfume’. Beautifully nestled on a hill from which awe-inspiring views stretching as far as the Mediterranean coast create a stunning location where to invest in property. The surrounding medieval villages make for amazing day trips and excursions and are generally more authentic, rustic and unspoilt than their famous tourist neighbours along the coast. With only 15 kilometres to the iconic French Riviera and its famous beaches and the historical Route Napoleon heading off into the hills behind the town, anyone looking for Grasse property is about to discover a beautiful corner of France.
With a population of just over 50.000, Grasse is the perfect Mediterranean home for those seeking the benefits of life in a slightly larger town. The town is complete with a large selection of every day shops, as well as shops selling Provence specialities such as soap, olive oil and of course perfume. Since the 18th Century, Grasse has been the home to the prospering French perfume industry. Known today as the world’s perfume capital, Grasse and its environs benefit from a warm, sheltered Mediterranean climate which for generations has encouraged the cultivations of the flowers, especially Jasmine, required in the manufacturing of top brand perfumes.
Molinard, Fragonard and Galimard are veritable institutions in the French perfume industry and all contribute to one of the main events in the annual Grasse calendar; the Fete du Jasmin. Every August for two days, the old streets are filled with beautifully decorated floats and during the ‘Battle of the Flowers’ revellers become covered by the scent of freshly harvested local flowers. This tradition dating back to 1946, is positively modern compared to the roots of Grasse itself. These stretch back to the 9th Century when the town withstood Saracen raids. The foundations of the stunning Notre Dame du Puy Cathedral date from soon after this period. Today it contains three paintings by Rubens.
However, most of the Vielle Ville, or Old Town, dates from the 17th and 18th Centuries and today forms a maze of tiny, winding streets. Follow them up and down ancient steps and through arched tunnels, past tucked-away restaurants and into sunny squares. Since the 19th Century, Grasse has been a firm fixture on the Grand Tour, often housing important historical characters such as Napoleon’s Sister, Princess Pauline Bonaparte as well as Queen Victoria. Thanks to its warm, but fresh climate, these visitors often came to recover their health, especially during the mild winters. Invest in Grasse property and enjoy this stunning Provence town all year round.
