Cost of Living in France

French property, the cost of living in France and the standard of living in France.

France has one of the highest selections of luxury properties in some of the most sought after residential areas in the world. French property pricing in the French Riviera varies greatly, encompassing a wide range of purchasing abilities. Much to do with this is the location of the property; older buildings in the countryside tend to work out the best value. French property prices have historically been relatively stable, and this has not altered in recent years. Housing prices on the whole have not seen huge reductions, but there has instead been a reduction in inflation, meaning that this historical stability has been carried through over the years helping to reduce the cost of living in France. The view of purchasing property as a long term investment, by both buyers and banks, contributes heavily to this stability.

France is well-known for its extensive rail networks and airports, making travel to many areas readily accessible. Car rental is of course, a popular option, and putting in a little research means that this does not have to be expensive. Petrol costs are similar to that of the UK, though the price of diesel fuel is marginally cheaper. The best way to travel is on the Péage (toll motorway). Costs average out at roughly 1 € per 10km, guaranteeing smoother and more relaxed travel. There are toll-free options though this is not necessarily the most economical choice.

Fine cuisine in France is readily accessible, and with restaurants boasting some of the world's finest dishes, it's certainly worth taking the time to sample some authentic, regional French food. Brasserie's are inexpensive, all day alternatives to restaurants. Look out for the set menus, often including a drink. Food supermarket prices are not dissimilar to prices in the UK, though regional produce tends to be cheaper. Fresh food is of a much higher quality and contributes to reducing the cost of living in France.

Being the national drink, wine is consumed with just about every meal and on every special occasion. France offers the most incredible choice of fine wine, at very reasonable prices; a perfectly drinkable bottle can be as little as half the price of that of the UK, and buying wine from various regions of France ensures all palates are catered for. Ordering a carafe usually works out at best value, if dining out.

The south of France not only offers the idyllic lifestyle, but boasts some of the finest temperate climates, with temperatures rising to highs of 30 degrees in summer, to make relocation to the south a real option.
